Bayhawks Strong Goaltending/Defense Mark 2nd Exhibition Game
Goal Keepers Garrity and Levin Shine Despite Narrow 9-7 Loss to Denver

SEVERNA PARK – Attackman Danny Glading scored three goals while goalkeeper Chris Garrity made eight saves in just over a half of play as the Chesapeake Bayhawks lost a tight battle with the Denver Outlaws, 9-7, in an exhibition game between two of the top teams in Major League Lacrosse.   Attackman Andrew “Buggs” Combs had one goal and one assist for the Bayhawks, who were held to single digits despite firing 45 shots on Denver goalies Jesse Schwartzman and Adam Fullerton.   “It was a great test for both teams. I thought we played well against a very talented Denver club,” Bayhawks head coach John Tucker said. “Denver has two phenomenal goalkeepers and they took away some goals tonight. However, I thought our shooting wasn’t particularly great.”

Midfielders Brian Vetter and Peet Poillon along with attackman Josh Coveleski scored the other goals for the Bayhawks, who are working in several newcomers to the offense and thus still developing chemistry.   “They stretched out on us defensively and applied a lot of pressure. That said, we have some improvements to make in our offensive sets and movement. Motion off the ball is going to be key,” Tucker said.   Schwartzman and Fullerton combined to make 14 saves for Denver, which lost in the Major League Lacrosse Championship game last season.   “I think we really made their goalies look good tonight. We had some trouble shooting offensively,” said Bayhawks midfielder BenHunt, who knows the unit is capable of consistently scoring in the high teens this season. “We have unlimited talent on our offense. Every player that steps onto that end of the field is a threat. We just need to work on meshing a little bit. Once we develop some chemistry and get the ball moving a little better our shots will start dropping.”

Chesapeake’s defense was outstanding with Mike Levin taking over goaltending duties in the second half and making four saves. Returning starter Mike Evans has been joined on close defense by offseason pickups Ray Megill (Boston Cannons) and Joe Cinosky (Toronto Nationals), who played together at Maryland.   “I thought the defense was great. They were real physical and got the ball to the ground a lot. It’s a shame we weren’t able to reward those guys on the other end of the field,” Tucker said. “I was really happy with both of our goalkeepers. We’re very happy with that position.”   Long stick midfielder P.T. Ricci also played well, gobbling up five ground balls and helping with the clearing game.   “I feel good about our defense. We’re all still getting used to each other’s styles, but I think we’re physical and aggressive,” Evans said.

All-Pro attackman Brendan Mundorf scored two goals to lead Denver, which will play Team England on Sunday (10 a.m.) at Severn School.   An overflow crowd of about 750 filled the bleachers at Severn School for the rare opportunity to see a Major League Lacrosse game for free. Bayhawks president Brendan Kelly was gratified to see so many fans show up.   “It was a great turnout today. There wasn’t an open seat in the house. To see how packed the stands were was very encouraging,” Kelly said. “Clearly, a lot of people in the area are supporting the Chesapeake Bayhawks and MLL.”

The Bayhawks open their regular season on May 15th at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium when they take on the Long Island Lizards at 7pm.  Ticket information is available at www.thebayhawks.com.

Emotional University of Delaware Men’s Lacrosse Squad Storms Past Drexel 15-12; Heads to Towson for CAA Title Saturday

NEWARK, Del. --  The University of Delaware men's lacrosse squad capped an emotional week by putting in a big effort Wednesday night, using a seven-goal second quarter that propelled the Blue Hens to a 15-12 victory over No. 9 ranked Drexel in a Colonial Athletic Association tournament semifinal game at Delaware Stadium.

Sophomore Grant Kaleikau scored his first career hat trick and dished out an assist, senior All-American Curtis Dickson continued his season-long scoring binge with three more goals, and junior goalkeeper Noah Fossner, playing just three days after the death of his mother, registered 14 saves to lead the No. 2 seed Blue Hens to their fourth straight victory.

Delaware (9-6) will now head to top-seed and No. 20 ranked Towson for the CAA Championship game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Towson, Md. The Tigers advanced with a 13-6 victory over No. 4 seed and No. 16 ranked Massachusetts Wednesday night in the other semifinal game. Saturday's winner will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

"This was one of the most emotional nights I've been through as a head coach," said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw, who coached his NCAA record 543rd career game in his 35th season. "We have such a close team and we were so excited to play tonight. It was a special moment. This week was an emotional one (with Noah's mother passing away), but this team just keeps getting tighter and tighter and bonding together. We are playing well at the right time and hopefully we can keep things going.”

The game was played before a spirited crowd of 1,305, many of them dressed in pink to support Fossner and honor his mother, Elaine, who passed away Sunday after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Delaware players and members of the coaching staff wore pink shoelaces and pink wristbands to show their support.

"I don't remember much of the game tonight," said Fossner, a junior from Niskayuna, N.Y. who set the tone early with several big saves in the first quarter on the way to a save total that was just one shy of his season high. "The night was about our team, but it was also a salute to my mom. I think she was looking down and was proud of what we did. It was a great night."

Kaleikau finished with four points on three goals and an assist, Dickson upped his NCAA?leading goal total to 57 with his 11th hat trick of the season, and Martin Cahill, Carter Bloor, and Anthony Ruiz also chipped in with two goals apiece while longstick midfielder Taylor Burns had a goal and two assists. Dickson, a Tewaaraton Trophy candidate as the national player of the year, has now scored a goal in 24 straight games and a point in 55 straight contests and his season goal total of 57 is tied for the second highest in school history and the longest since Don Swan set the UD standard with 65 in 1951.

Drexel, the tournament No. 3 seed, lost to the Blue Hens for the second time in two weeks after falling to Delaware by a 10-6 score back on Apr. 24. The Dragons, who entered the game ranked among the national leaders in scoring defense, allowed a season-high 15 goals, including four of the man-up variety. Robert Church led the Dragons with three goals and three assists while Ryan West and Kevin Stockel each netted two goals. Drexel lost despite a 44-32 advantage in shot, a 38-31 margin in groundballs, and a 20-9 advantage on faceoffs.

“We held tight defensively and forced some turnovers which was big for us tonight,” said Shillinglaw, who will be looking to lead the Hens to their second CAA?title in four years and to their 15th league title in his 32-year tenure at Delaware. “Our man-down defense was great, our man-up offense was excellent and was the key to the game, and Noah was great in the cage.”

Delaware jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first four minutes of play but Drexel stormed back by scoring five straight goals by five different players to grab a 5-2 advantage. Delaware’s Bloor scored his first goal with 1:27 left to snap a the Dragon streak and Ruiz and Kaleikau scored the first two goals of the second stanza to knot the score at 5-5.

Church scored his first goal with 11:36 left in the half to give Drexel a 6-5 lead, but the Blue Hens responded by scoring five straight goals, including back-to-back man-up goals by Cahill in a span of three minutes, as part of a seven-goal stanza. Delaware took a 10-6 lead into the break.

The Hens led the rest of the way but had to hold off a late Drexel rally to do so. Four straight goals by Delaware’s Ruiz, Dickson, Kaleikau, and Bloor pushed the Blue Hen lead to 14-7 after three quarters, but Drexel scored the first four goals of the final stanza, including two by Stockel, to cut the deficit to 14-11 with 10:05 left to play.

But Delaware regrouped, got a man-up goal from Nick Elsmo with 8:29 left to play, and never let Drexel get closer than three goals the rest of the way.

Towson Continues Five Game Win Streak

Towson came into today’s game versus Penn State ranked 15th in the country according to the Nike/IL media poll. Towson has come on strong having won their last 4 games. Towson currently holds the hardest strength of schedule according to laxpower.com. With a (5-5) record and a conference record of (3-0) the tigers look to storm into the CAA tournament with #1 seed and home field advantage. On the other side of the ball Penn State came into the game with a (2-9) record overall with a (1-2) record in conference. The last time these two teams played was back in 2003 with Towson wining the game 11-6 at home. Towson leads the all time series (12-4). The last time Penn state beat Towson was back in 1995 with a 15-10 win at home which was also the last time these two teams met during the regular season.

Towson midfielder Scott Ruhl gets the action started with the first goal of the game and his 2nd on the season. Penn Sate had an opportunity to tie the game up by Charley Henneghan shots off the post. Towson takes advantage of the missed opportunity and Carl Iacona gives Towson the early two goal lead. With that goal he now has 6 goals on the season. PSU finally gets on the board with three minutes remaining in the first quarter, freshman sensation Nick Dolic scores the first goal and his 17th on the season. Last week Nick was named CAA Rookie of the Week after his game wining goal against #11 Hofstra. Nick had two goals in the game as he lead Penn State to the 11-10 overtime win and their second win on the season. Towson’s game was also senior day for the Tigers, It would only seem fitting that the seniors get involved in the game. With a little over one minute left to go in the quarter Senior Matt Lamon would finally get the seniors on the board scoring his first goal on the game and his 8th on the season. The Towson Tigers would take a two goal lead going into the second quarter 3-1.

Senior midfielder Brock Armour would get the 2nd quarter started with his first in the game and his 4th on the season giving the Tigers a 4-1 lead. Trying to cut into the lead Penn State midfielder Chris Hogan scores his first goal of the game and his 14th on the season. Chris Hogan the junior from New Jersey is one the Penn State captains Towson quickly strikes back on the extra man goal from Stephen Norris his first of the game and his 7th on the season giving te Tigers the 5-2 lead. Penn Sate would not just give up, Matt Mackrides would score his first goal of the game off the face-off cutting the Tigers lead to 2 goals. Matt currently leads the Nittany Lions with 32 goals on the season. Matt also is in the top ten in goals in the NCAA heading into this weeks action. He is also currently 7th in the NCAA with a (2.82) goals per game average. The lions pecking away at the Towson lead score another goal this time by Nick Dolik his 2nd in the game cutting the Towson lead to 5-4 with a little over six minutes remaining in the half. Towson would storm back to a 3 goal lead with back to back goals from Matt Hughes 8th on the season and Tim Stratton his 12th on the season.  With time expiring Penn State attackman Billy Gribbin would not be denied as he scores his first goal of the game and his 20th goal of the season. Towson would lead the game 7-5 going into the half.

It wasn’t until 5 minutes left in the third quarter for the first goal of the second half.  Towson senior Will Harrington scores his first goal of the game and his 21st of the season. With that goal Harrington continues his streak of 11 games with at least one point. Penn State would get on the board with a goal by Billy Gribbin his second on the day cutting the Tigers lead to two goals with a minute and a half to go in the third quarter. The Towson junior Tim Stratton would answer right back with his second goal of the game to put the tigers back on top by three goals and a score of 9-6.

Towson having struggled all year long with the second half hoped to hold onto the three goal lead going into the fourth quarter of the game. Towson has been involved in 6 games that have been decided by two goals or less and 4 of them where decided by one goal. Towson is 5-1 coming into the game in these type of games. As the fourth quarter got under way Penn Sate would rattle off three straight goals to tie the game up a 9-9 with six minutes remaining in the game. You could only imagine that Towson coach Tony Seman had visions of his first game of the season as he let Bucknell come back from a three goal deficit only to win the game in the fourth quarter by four goals. Both Billy Gribbin and Nick Dolic would score the hat trick. Towson grad student Christian Pastirik would add his first goal on the game with six minutes reaming. It would be his 19th on the season and prove to be the game winner. Towson now moves to (6-5) on the season and (4-0) in the conference. The Tigers clinch the CAA regular season title and the top seed on the conference tournament. This would also mark the fourth time the Tigers have won the first four games in the CAA since joining the conference in 2002. Next up for Towson the mighty Johns Hopkins squad looking to rebound from two straight loses. The game will be Wednesday night at 7pm at Homewood Field. Penn State falls to (2-10) and (1-3) in conference. Penn State will take on Delaware next Friday at 7:30.

Lacrosse’s Greatest Rivalry: Maryland vs. Hopkins

Baltimore, MD (April 17, 2010)—Lacrosse’s greatest rivalry was showcased under the lights of M&T Bank Stadium Saturday night at the Day of Rivals. It was the 106th time the two schools have met. The rivalry dates back to 1895, Hopkins holds the edge with a 58-37-1 record. The first ten games were held before lacrosse was considered an official sport of the NCAA. Maryland came into the game currently ranked 4th with a (7-2) record. Hopkins currently ranked 16th comes in with a (5-5) record and needs to add a quality win to their resume at hopes to stay alive for the NCAA tournament. Last year at the inaugural Day of Rivals Hopkins beat Maryland 10-9 and snapped its 4 game losing streak. But the night would be a rough night for the Blue Jays as they fall to Maryland 10-9.

The young guns of Hopkins would start the team out on the right foot by getting its first goal of the game scored by freshman John Ranagan who came into the game having scored 8 goals. Top freshman recruit John Greeley would add to the Hopkins lead by getting his first goal on the game and his 5th goal on the season. With a little under 5 minutes to go in the first Ryan Boyle would give Hopkins a 3-0 lead adding his first goal of the game and his 25th goal on the season. Currently Ryan ranks 15th in the nation in points per game (4.00), 25th in goals per game (2.4), and 27thMaryland would get on the board with 3 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter with a goal by Grant Catalino his 19thHopkins would lead Maryland 3-1. goal on the season. At the end of the first in assists per game (1.6).

The freshman duo of Ranagan to Greeley would start the 2nd quarter off, Greeley adding his 2nd goal of the day giving Hopkins a 4-1 lead.  With 8 minutes to go in the quarter Ryan Young scores his 1st goal of the game and his 11thMaryland’s win over Navy. Maryland claws their way back within one goal with 5 minutes remaining in the half, scoring an extra-man goal by Adam Sear his 9th on the season. Maryland all season has struggled in the 1st half only to pick up the tempo in the 2nd half of the game. At the end of the first half Hopkins would hold onto a one goal lead at 4-3. Maryland lucky to be only down by one goal at half, Hopkins failed to score on any of there extra-man opportunities (0-6) in the half. Hopkins is still struggling on its man-up opportunities at 36% converting on only 13 of 36. Maryland is holding its opponents to only 33% conversion or the man-up opportunity.
on the season.

Maryland would come out firing on all cylinders in the 3rd quarter scoring 2 quick goals by Travis Reed and Drew Snider giving Maryland its first lead of the game at 5-4. Hopkins midfielder Mike Kimmel would add his 1st goal of the game and his 15th of the season tying the game up at 5-5 with 5 minutes to go in the quarter. Mike has joined an elite club at Hopkins eclipsing the 130 career point mark last week against Albany. Currently Mike ranks second on the team in scoring. Quickly after the Kimmel goal Maryland would regain the lead with an extra-man goal scored by Joe Cummings his 1st in the game and his 10th on the season. At the end of the 3rd quarter Maryland holds onto a 6-5 lead.

Maryland’s Will Yeatman would see some action in the game after being out with a broken hand assisting Travis Reed early in the 4th for his 2nd goal on the game giving Maryland the two goal advantage with 14 minutes remaining in the game. 20 seconds after the Travis Reed goal, Grant Catalino would add his 2nd goal of the game and his 20th on the season. Holding a 3 goal lead Senior Will Yeatman adds his first goal of the game giving Maryland a 9-5 lead with 12 minutes to go in the game.  Hopkins would finally convert on an extra-man opportunity with 11 minutes to go in the game with Steven Boyle scoring his 2nd goal of the game and pulling Hopkins to within 3 goals of the Maryland lead. Marshall Burkhart from Hopkins would scores his 1st goal of the season to pull Hopkins to within 2 goals of the lead. After the Hopkins goal Maryland Defenseman Jesse Bernhardt would hear nothing of it as the defenseman would score his 2nd goal of the season putting Maryland back on top by 3 goals with under 7 minutes to go in the game and also becoming a key goal in the Maryland win. It is always great to see a defenseman go coast to coast with the ball and score on a one on one shot. With just under 2 minutes to go in the game Maryland goes on the prevent defense with a 3 goal lead. As we all know what that means when you go on prevent, Hopkins would quickly score 2 goals by Steve Boyle his 3rd of the game and one by Mike Kimmel his 2nd in the game pulling Hopkins to within 1 goal at 10-9 with exactly one minute remaining. Maryland would win the ensuing face-off but a quick turnover by Maryland would make it interesting. Hopkins would come up just short of the win giving Maryland the 10-9 win and bragging rights for the year.

With this win Maryland moves to (8-2) on the season and will face North Carolina this Friday at College Park, Maryland lost the earlier match up 9-7 at Carolina. For the Blue Jays they fall to (5-6) on the season and look to keep their playoff hopes alive as they take on Navy Saturday at noon at Navy-Marine Corp Stadium. for the ACC semi-finals.

88th Edition Army / Navy Lacrosse

Baltimore, MD (April 17, 2010)—In the first game on the day the Navy Midshipman take on the Army Black Knights in the 88th edition of this elite rivalry. This game marks the second time in Army-Navy history that the Star game is played on a neutral field. Currently the Navy Midshipman hold a (57-27-3) record against the Black Knights. Last year at Day of Rivals Navy won 8-4. Navy comes into the game having lost a close one to Maryland 11-9 last weekend and hold a (5-6) record on the year. Army comes into the game having won their last two meetings against Colgate and Bucknell and are hoping to bounce back after a dismal first half of the season. Army came into the game with a (5-5) record and look to build on the last two weeks of the season.

Army gets on the board first with a goal scored by #2 Jeremy Boltus, his 17th goal on the season. Currently Jeremy is 4th in assists and is 15th in scoring nationally. With that goal it moves Jeremy into 19th on the all time points list for Army with 119 points scored. With 2 minutes to go in the first quarter Navy finally gets on the board with two back to back goals the first by #33 Kyle Kapron and the second coming only a few seconds apart by # 6 Nikk Davis a rocket to the upper corner of the goal. Last week Senior Kyle Kapron scored a career best with 3 goals against Maryland in the loss. It was his first multi point contest of his career.

Tyler Seymour of Army gets the action started in the 2nd quarter with his first goal of the game and his 13th goal on the season. Last week Tyler scored the OT game winner against Bucknell. With that goal Army tied the game at 2 goals apiece. #41 Tyler Oats Scores his 1st goal on the game and his 7th of the season as Army takes a 3-2 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the 1st half. Ryan O’Leary ties the game up at 3-3 with his 1st goal of the game and his 7th on the season.  Even with the sloppy play in the first half by Navy they are still able to keep the game close with great play by goalie RJ Wickham. Currently he is ranked 1st in the country in save percentage, having stopped 62.7 percent of the shots he has faced this year. With five minutes remaining in the 1st half Jeremy Boltus scores his 2nd goal of the game and then adds on an assist shortly after to Garret Thul to give the Black Knights a 5-3 advantage. At the end of the first half Army takes a two goal lead.

Navy got the 2nd half under way with a goal scored by #12 Kevin Doyle, the junior from Gilman scores his first goal of the game pulling the Midshipman within one goal at 4-5. With less than 3 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter Garret Thul scores his 2nd goal of the game and his 25th of the season giving the Midshipman a 6-4 lead. At the end of the 3rd quarter Army led Navy 6-4.

Going into the 4th quarter Army had racked up over 4 minutes in penalties but still managed to hold a 2 goal lead. Navy up to this point had only capitalized on 1 of 5 extra man opportunities. Up to this point in the season Army holds a .674% on man-down defense and ranks 23 in the NCAA. Navy continues to struggle on the extra-man only converting on 37.8% on the season. Joe Lennon gets Navy within in one goal scoring his 1st goal of the game and ending a 20 minute drought by both teams with the last goal coming at the end of the third quarter with 3 minutes remaining. The flood gates are open as Nikk Davis scores his 2nd goal on the game and ties the game up at 6-6. With that goal Davis ties his season best at 2 goals having scored 2 goals in the opener against VMI. Army’s Jeremy Boltus recaptures the lead with 4 minutes remaining in the game giving him the hat-trick and Army a 7-6 advantage. With 37 seconds Nikk Davis dives in front of the goal and scores but was taken away by the Officials saying that the goal got knocked off before the ball went into the net. The charge at the end would not be enough as Army wins the game 7-6 in dramatic fashion. With this win Army goes to (6-5) on the season and (3-0) in the Patriot League. Army will look to stay undefeated in league play as they will face Lafayette this Tuesday on the road who is also (3-0) in league play and (8-2) on the season. Navy will look to pick up the pieces this week against a very determined (5-6) Hopkins team this Saturday at Navy-Marine Corp Stadium.

TOP-RANKED VIRGINIA KEEPS WINNING STREAK OVER TOWSON

TOWSON, MD -- On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Unitas Stadium in Towson, the Tigers (1-3) had the tall task of facing the top-ranked lacrosse team in the nation, the University of Virginia Cavaliers, which with a perfect record of 7-0 held the #1 seed for a second consecutive week in both major lacrosse polls, Nike/Inside Lacrosse media and USILA coaches’ poll.

Towson got off to an early start off a Virginia turnover, with sophomore Matt Lamon netting the first goal of the game (and his first one of the season) with a little over a minute elapsing.  Nevertheless, the Cavaliers answered with back-to-back goals by Brian Carroll and Chris Bocklet to take an early 2-1 lead.

The Tigers did a great job of causing turnovers, and went on a solid 3-0 run late in the period. Towson’s top scorer, Will Harrington, along with Matt Hughes and Christian Pastirik, gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead in the game, being televised nationally on ESPNU.

Freshman Chris LaPierre scored to open the second quarter and discount the Towson advantage to one, and shortly thereafter, the Cavaliers completed a 5-0 run with goals by Shamel Bratton, Bocklet (his second of the game), Steele Stanwick, and Matt Kugler, securing their highest lead (7-4) with 7:49 left.

Pastirik netted his second of the game, and Towson’s first goal of the quarter, with 4:56 left, with Virginia still holding the 7-5 lead. Hughes then went on to score his own brace and dwindle the Cavaliers lead to one, but with Stanwick’s second of the game, Virginia retook the two-goal lead (8-6) going into half-time.

Towson started the half with one-man advantage due to an illegal procedure 30-second penalty on Brian McDermott at the end of the second quarter, and was able to capitalize immediately with a goal by Stephen Norris. Virginia then received a slashing penalty that gave the one-man advantage to the Tigers for one minute, but the score remained 8-7 in favor of the Cavaliers.

Bratton, named to Inside Lacrosse’s Player of the Year Watch List, scored his second of the game to once again give the Cavaliers a two-goal advantage.  An extra-man goal by Bocklet, a hat-trick for the sophomore, and a brace for LaPierre gave the Cavaliers their highest lead of the game (11-7) with 2:42 left in the third quarter.

Graduate student midfielder Christian Pastirik scored his second hat-trick of the season for Towson, but Carroll’s second of the game kept the Virginia lead at four (12-8).

At the beginning of the 4th quarter, freshman Connor English scored Virginia’s 13th goal.  Junior midfielder Michael Brashears went on to net his first career goal to keep the Tigers close, but back-to-back goals by Bocklet (matching his career-high of four) and John Haldy gave the Cavaliers their highest lead of the game (15-9).

A man up in the final minute, Matt Hughes scored the last goal for Towson, and the Cavaliers went on to win (15-10) their tenth consecutive game over the Tigers, their second-longest active winning streak over a Division I rival.

#5 UMD vs. UMBC: Battle of the Beltways

Catonsville, MD (March 20, 2010) – A rough week for UMBC, last week losing 2 games to top ten opponents, JHU and Princeton. Coming into the game, the Retrievers are 1-4 on the season with their only win coming against Rutgers. On the other side of the ball, the Terrapins are 5-0 on the season and Ranked in the top 5 of the Inside Lacrosse / Nike Media poll. Currently, UMD holds a 24-7 record against the Retrievers, but UMBC has taken the last three match ups. Last years' score was 9-7 in favor of UMBC.

In the battle of the beltway, UMBC and UMD came out hitting hard. The defense would set the tone for the game on both sides. Maryland would get the first goal on the game with a shot from #2 Adam Sear his fourth goal on the year giving Maryland the early 1-0 lead. UMBC would then come back late in the period and score a goal by #16 Shane Ryznar his third goal on the season to tie the game at 1-1. Maryland would then re-claim the lead with a goal by #1 Grant Catalino his 11th on the season. With about 2 minutes remaining in the first UMBC’s Shane Ryznar scooped the ball into the net of MD but would be waived off for crossing into the crease. With ten seconds left in the 1st Adam Sear would add his second goal on the game to give the Terrapins a 3-1 lead going into the second.

At the start of the second the hard hitting would continue with UMD jumping out early with back to back goals by Catalino, his 2nd on the day, and #3 Jake Bernhardt, his 6th goal on the season to give Maryland the 5-1 lead. Kyle Wimer brings a 24 game point scoring streak (the eighth longest in the nation). Last year Wimer had 2 goals and 1 assist against UMD in the 9-7 win. Maryland would continue to dominate the second with a goal by #10 Mike Shakespeare his 4th goal on the season. UMBC having problems converting on the man-up opportunity are 0-3 up to this point and are 10-40 on the season.

After the Maryland Penalty kill, UMBC Matt Latham would put the Retrievers on the board late in the second with his 8th goal on the season. Maryland still would lead 6-2. UMBC would quickly answer with a goal by Shane Ryznar giving him the hat-trick and his 5th goal on the season. UMBC would still trail 10-4 with 11 minutes to go in the third. Maryland’s Jake Bernhardt would add his 2nd goal on the day giving Maryland a seven goal lead at 11-4. UMBC still struggling on the man-up opportunities, they are 0-4 on the day so far. Give credit to the Maryland Defense, becoming very stingy on the shot opportunities given to UMBC on the man-up. Maryland currently on the season has only allowed 8 goals on the man-up and are holding opponents to 35%. With two minutes left in the third Shane Ryznar scores his 4th goal on the day trying to keep UMBC in the game, Maryland still leads 11-5. UMBC’s Max Davis would quickly score his 1st goal on the day and the season cutting the deficit to 11-6 with less than two minutes left in the third.

Wimer still with no points going into the fourth takes a shot early in the fourth but referees miss the goal as the ball bounces out from the top corner of the net. Wimer struggling on the day to get a clean shot at the net as the Maryland defense has done a great job at holding him to zero points. With 12 minutes left in the fourth Grant Catalino would give Maryland a 6 goal lead scoring his 4th goal and the day. Maryland really dominating on all aspects of the game from the penalty kills to the face-offs. Coach Cottle had his team ready to play this match up versus the Retrievers. With five minutes left in the game Maryland’s Will Yateman would get his first goal on the day and his 7th on the season giving Maryland a 13-6 advantage. Maryland goalie Brian Phipps would leave the game with 3 minutes remaining giving sophomore Mark White an opportunity to see some action. Brian Phipps would only allow 6 minutes on the day. Face-Off Classic An Instant Classic

The attendance was the second largest crowd to oversee these games. 2010 would bring a new change, a third game to the all ready star studded lineup. This year’s lineup would also bring the only time this event would see all 6 teams ranked in the top 10 of the Nike Media poll.

Game 1: #7 University of Maryland vs. #9 Duke University

The day would start off strong with this powerful ACC rivalry. All ready marked by a basketball defeat early in the week for these two schools it was time to bring the rivalry from the court to the field.   Last year Maryland won this game in dramatic fashion, on this day the outcome would be the same. The game was very physical by both teams, some hard hitting, and a ton of scoring. In a game that would be a back and forth battle all day the Terrapins took a 3 goal lead heading into the 4th quarter of play.

With about four minutes remaining in regulation Duke would slow chip away at the Maryland lead. With about 13 seconds left in regulation Will McKee rips a goal past Maryland goalie Brian Phipps to send the game in to Overtime. Tied at 10, Duke looked to try to end this game quick. It looked like Duke may score when Will Mckee had the ball in front of an open net, Maryland midfielder Bryan Holmes separated the ball from him with a monstrous hit in front of the net. Maryland long pole midfielder Brian Farrel picked up the ball, and ran down field and passed the ball over to midfielder Dean Hart. Hart then spots an open Grant Catalino who then rockets a shot past Duke goalie Dan Wigrizer. The Terps win in dramatic fashion as the Terrapins now move to 3-0 while the Duke Blue Devils move to 2-2 on the season. Maryland takes on local Towson University while Duke travels back to Baltimore to take on Loyola next Saturday.

Game 2: #8 Princeton University vs. #4 Johns Hopkins University

With one game already done for the day and the fans marinated by the exciting first game; the home town favorite Johns Hopkins University would take the field trying to redeem the loss they suffered by the hands of Princeton Tigers last season at the Face-Off Classic. Fans also got a surprise by getting to see Senior attackman Chris Boland play in his first game of the season after not playing the past 3 games due to disciplinary reasons. The game would be controlled for the most part. The Tigers took a 7-4 lead into halftime and 10- lead with 4 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter.

Hopkins Freshman Zack Palmer would bring the Blue Jays within one goal. With 15 seconds remaining and down by one Hopkins star Mike Kimmel would get his first and only goal in the game.  Tied at 10 and becoming a mirror image of the first game Hopkins was hoping for the same outcome as the Terrapins.  The most significant goal would be scored by the Tigers Scott Mackenzie his lone goal in the game. The senior midfielders’ blast would end the game with the score of 11-10. With this win the Tigers move to 2-0 on the season while the loss would drop the Blue Jays to 3-1. The Blue jays look to bounce back as they take on cross town rival UMBC Tuesday night. Princeton looks to continue its winning ways as they take on Manhattan Tuesday night as well.

Game 3: #4 University of Notre Dame vs. #10 Loyola University

In the final game on the night all adrenaline was pumping as the fans just sat through 2 exciting OT thrillers. Would this be our lucky day? Would we get to see another OT game happen. Fans would not be disappointed as the Greyhounds would look to try and upset the Fighting Irish on this perfect day. But, the end would not be so perfect for the Greyhounds. The match-up everyone was looking forward to was that of Notre Dame goalie Scott Rodgers versus Loyola attackman Collin Finnerty. The fighting Irish would hold Finnerty for the most part only allowing him to score 3 goals on the day. Would seem like a good day for most but not for a star like Finnerty who didn’t score his 1st goal till the 3rd quarter.

The game would start out slow being marred by turnovers and penalties. At half the score would be a surprising low 5-3 with Loyola trailing. Loyola would quickly pick things up in the third by scoring 3 straight goals to take the lead 6-5 on 2 goals by Colin Finnerty.  In the end Notre Dame would come out on top leading the way for the Fighting Irish would be Zack Brenneman with 3 goals on the day. Scott Rodgers and he team found a way to win 11-9. The Irish should have scored more but the Greyhounds were able to stop all 6 man up attempts by the Irish but it wasn’t enough to stop them from coming out on top.  With this win Notre Dame goes to 3-0, while the Greyhounds fall to 3-1 on the season. Loyola takes on Duke next Saturday at home while Notre Dame travels to Texas to take on Fairfield University.

#16 Brown Laxers Fall To #11 Hofstra, 15-12, In Season Opening Game

Hempstead, NY – 16th-ranked Brown finally opened its 2010 men’s lacrosse season on Saturday, the last team in the country to do so, and dropped a hard-fought 15-12 decision to #11 Hofstra at Shuart Stadium.

Hofstra (1-1) broke open a close 12-11 advantage late in the fourth quarter to earn its first win of the season.

In a tightly played first quarter, Brown got on the scoreboard first when senior All-American Thomas Muldoon scored on a feed from sophomore Rob Schlesinger with 1:15 left to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage.

A defensive first quarter opened up into a high scoring second quarter, with the Flying Dutchmen having the better of play.  Hofstra scored five of the next six goals scored to grab a 5-2 lead with 7:34 left in half.

Brown senior middie Reade Seligmann got the Bears back into the game with his first goal of the season on a pass from junior David Hawley to cut the Hofstra lead to 5-3 with 5:23 left to play in the half.  A late goal by Hofstra’s Mike DeNapoli gave the Dutchmen a 6-3 halftime advantage.

Junior Matt Greenberg and Seligman scored quick goals for the Bears to open the third quarter and cut the Hofstra lead to 6-5. The Flying Dutchmen scored the next three goals to climb ahead by a 9-5 margin, before Muldoon netted his third and fourth goals of the day to get the Bears back into the game, trailing 9-7.

Goal by Hofstra’s Adrian Sorichetti and Brad Loizeaux gave the Flying Dutchmen an 11-7 advantage after three quarters.

Brown came roaring back to score four of the next five goals and trailed, 12-11, on Seligmann’s third goal of the game with 9:23 left on the clock.  Hawley scored two goals and freshman Ben Sherman added another in the 4-1 spurt.

But that was as close as the Bears would get as Hofstra took control of the game with three straight goals to build a 15-11 advantage.

Junior Matt Chriss made his first collegiate start in goal for the Bears and made 13 saves.  The Bears were out-shot by Hofstra by a 39-30 margin.  Hofstra goalie Rob Bellairs registered 12 saves.

Muldoon’s four goals and one assist led the Bears, while Seligmann and Hawley added three goals each.  Seligman also distributed a game high four assists.

Hofstra was led by Stephen Bentz with three goals and two assists.

The Bears will their first game at home on Wednesday, March 10, hosting Hartford at Meister-Kavan Field, starting at 3:00 p.m.

Towson Stumbles in Season Opener

Towson, MD (Feb 27, 2010) - #17 Bucknell came into today’s game with a 1-1 record that included an overtime heartbreaking loss to Duke at the beginning of the season. On the other side of the ball, Towson is playing their first game of the season and looking to find its identity after a 2009 record of 7-10.  Last year, on the road, the Tigers handed the Bison an 8-7 loss in a tight game.

Towson came out of the starting gate rusty. The 1st quarter of the game was plagued by turnovers by both teams. Towson would be the 1st team to strike early in the game by freshman #38 Matt Hughes, the first of his career. Bucknell would quickly tie the game with a goal by Ryan Klipstein. At the end of the 1st Bucknell would have the lead at 2-1. Going into the 2nd quarter Coach Seaman said he had been worried all week about not having played a game yet this year and that they had been simulating the 1st quarter all week in practice. This tactic paid off in the 2nd quarter when Towson scored 4 goals to take a 5-3 lead going into the half.  At the half way point Towson had dominated the Face-Offs winning 60%.

The second half of the game Bucknell would find their grove. Tim Brandau dominated with 5 goals scored, a career high for the senior attack man. At the end of the 3rd quarter Towson would still be holding onto a 9-7 lead.  The 4th quarter would be dominated by Brandau’s 4 goals. The Bison would come away with 6 total goals in the 4th to secure their 2nd victory on the year taking their record to 2-1 on the year. With the loss it will drop Towson to 0-1.  Bucknell will look to continue there winning ways by taking on Navy at Navy-Marin Corp Stadium next Saturday at 3pm. Towson will need to have a short term memory and look for the positives from this game. Towson will take on Stony Brook on the road; game time is set for 1pm next Saturday.

#5 Hopkins Cruises Past #20 Delaware in the Battle of the Blue Birds

Baltimore, MD (Feb 23, 2010) – Hopkins has played the Blue Hens six times in their history prior to this past Tuesdays match up and in those past six seasons the Blue Jays have advanced to the national title game. A great sign to come for coach Pietramala and his team. The last time these two teams played Hopkins beat Delaware in the 2007 NCAA Semi-Finals with a score of 8-3. In that game current Hopkins player #15 Michael Kimmel led the way for the Blue Jays with three goals. Delaware coming off a huge OT thriller against UMBC was looking to continue its winning ways. The game quickly started with #15 Michael Kimmel rolling to his right and striking with a shot high into the back of the net to put the Blue Jays up 1-0. Down 2-0 with over minutes to go in the 1st quarter Delaware star #17 Curtis Dickson would put his team on the board. The Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week would be held silent for the rest of the game by the quick and aggressive defense of Hopkins. Delaware quickly scored again by #22 Martin Cahill tying the score at 2-2.

As quickly as Delaware tied the game Hopkins had an answer. It would seem if Hopkins had an answer for everything. The 4 long poles and 2 shorties that Delaware loved to play and that gave UMBC a fit over the weekend would seem to not phase the Blue Jays as they ripped the Defense apart throughout the game.  The first half would end with Hopkins leading Delaware 7-4. Delaware going into half time still had hope of potentially still coming back and giving the Blue Jays a game. The 3rd quarter would be dominated by the Hopkins offense scoring 3 goals by 3 different people.

Delaware would come away with one goal scored by #22 Martin Cahill his 2nd goal on the night. Cahill would pretty much be the offense for the Blue Hens on this night. Going into the 4th quarter with a 10-5 lead the Blue Jays would continue their dominance on offense. The bright spot for the Delaware Blue Hens would be #22 Martin Cahill scoring 4 goals and tying his career high in goals for a game. This would be his 12th career hat trick and his 2nd in a row this season, but the night would belong to #15 Michael Kimmel scoring 3G and 4A. This would set his career high in points and assists. With this loss Delaware will look to pick up the pieces and re-group February 27th at Hartford. Hopkins will look to continue its undefeated season hosting Siena February 28th on ESPN U.

Upset Minded Delaware Shocks #14 UMBC in 3 OT

Baltimore, MD (Feb 20, 2010) – University of Delaware has pulled off an early upset to start off the 2010 NCAA lacrosse season. Leading up to this rivalry game, Maryland had been hit with the worst snow storm in history. Questions loomed if UMBC would be ready to face a very determined Blue Hens team. Following a year that they finished with a 5-10 record and a 2-4 record in the CAA the Blue Hens looked to build on last years record.  All ready having one game under their belt, a season opener against St. Josephs, a game in which the Blue Hens won 15-5. This one game would show to be an advantage to the Blue Hens being able to work out the early season kinks. The Blue Hens came out firing under all cylinders opening the game with a 6-4 lead at halftime.

Delaware’s #17 Curtis Dickson led all scorers with 5 goals going into the half. Coming back from the break in the 3rd quarter Delaware had the ball for the majority of the quarter scoring a goal by #22 Martin Cahill his 2nd of the game giving the Blue Hens a 7-4 advantage going into the 4th quarter. In the 4th quarter UMBC quickly struck with 2 goals, one from #39 Matt Latham and the other from #5 Rob Grimm bring the score to 7-6 and closing the gap between the 2 teams. The Blue Hens then quickly scored a goal by #23 Mark Steverson. At 8-6 and over 9 minutes to play in regulation the Blue Hens looked to hold onto the lead and their 2nd win of the season. UMBC not willing to go down without a fight scored the next 3 goals and took the lead at 9-8 with 2 minutes to go in regulation. With a little over one minute to play UMBC committed a pushing penalty that lead to the Blue Hens tying the game 9-9 scored by #22 Martin Cahill. UMBC then quickly struck on another man up opportunity by #17 Curtis Dickson to bring the score to 10-9 with a little over 1 min to go in regulation.

UMBC determined not to lose the home opener scored with 30 seconds left in the game #24 Bobby Stockton scored his third goal of the quarter to bring the score and take the game into overtime. In the first 2 overtimes both teams were held in check with great defense and goalkeeping.  With a 4th overtime looking likely, the star on the day #17 Curtis Dickson scores his 7th goal in the game with a few seconds to go in the 3rd overtime. Previous to this game UMBC had been 8-0 in overtime games with their last overtime loss coming against Penn. UMBC star #20 Kyle Wimer became the 27th player in UMBC history to exceed 100 points in his career. With this win the Delaware Blue Hens take on Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field on Tuesday February 23rd at 5pm.  UMBC will look to rebound next weekend against Rutgers on February 27th at 3pm.

ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 12, 2010) – Two-time MLL Champions Jeff Zywicki and Nick O’Hara along with Jordan Levine were acquired today from the Toronto Nationals in exchange for Kevin Huntley, Josh Sims and 2 draft picks, according to Bayhawks General Manager Spencer Ford.

“We are very excited to again gain 3 players in a trade who can be part of the 19 man roster right away,” said General Manager Spencer Ford.  “Jeff Zywicki is a gamer, no matter what league he plays in; he always puts himself at the top of the scoring leaders. He will help take our team to the next level with his ability to score goals. Having Jeff, Danny Glading, Ben Rubeor, John Christmas and Andrew Combs makes us one of the best units in the game and will cause match-up problems for the other teams.”

Zywicki, a 2005 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, has scored 87 goals in 39 career games including back-to-back 31 goal seasons in 2007 and 2008.  Last year he scored 19 goals and had 14 assists for the Nationals.  In addition to being a member of the last two MLL Championship teams, Zywicki won a Gold Medal as a member of Team Canada at the 2006 World Championships.

“Jordan Levine is an unbelievable transition midfielder who can play D, run between the lines and score,” said Ford. “He will help us in a big way. Along with Matt Abbott, Benson Erwin, Billy Glading and Alex Buckley, we will be very hard to beat from the midfield and they will again cause matchup problems when transitioning the ball from D to O.”

Levine is entering his 3rd MLL season and will be joining his 3rd team.  After completing his college career at Albany he was the 10th overall pick in the 2008 collegiate draft by New Jersey and then played for Toronto in 2009.  Levine has registered 24 points in 21 career MLL games (12 goals, 12 assists) including 7 goals in 10 games last year for Toronto.

“Nick O'Hara can flat out play,” stated Ford. “He helps our defense in all aspects because of his ability to get the ball from one end to the other. He is very good at creating scoring opportunities after making a defensive play.”

O’Hara was a third round selection in the 2008 draft by Rochester after finishing up his collegiate career at Duke University.

“All in all, we are thrilled to have these 3 young men join the Bayhawks. They will be huge in helping us get back to Championship Weekend,” said Ford.

The Bayhawks sent Kevin Huntley, Josh Sims a 2010 5th round Collegiate Draft pick, and a 2011 3rd round Collegiate Draft pick to Toronto.  Huntley, a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, was the 17th overall selection in the 2008 Collegiate Draft and went on to win Cascade Rookie of the Year honors after registering 30 goals and 5 assists for Los Angeles.  Kevin will join his father Dave Huntley, head coach of the Nationals.  Prior to the 2009 season he was sent to Washington as part of the re-allocation process.  He scored 23 goals and registered 6 assists in his second season.

Sims is one of four remaining players from the original 18 allocated players at the inception of the league prior to the 2001 season.  He spent his first 5 MLL seasons with the Baltimore Bayhawks before joining Denver in 2006.  He was selected by Washington in December’s Supplemental Draft and now will be heading to Toronto.  In 80 career games Sims has scored 116 goals (15 two-point goals) and has registered 57 assists.  In 9 games last season with Denver he had 11 goals and 9 assists helping lead the Outlaws to the MLL Championship game where they fell to Toronto.

“Losing Kevin Huntley is very hard for us; we think the world of him and thank him for all he has done,” said Ford. “The kid is a gamer; we will always see him as a 30 plus goal scorer year in and year out. I told Kevin the only way we would let him go would be to give him and his father the opportunity to be part of the same organization. It’s not every day a person can say he or she went to and excelled at the same university as their dad or played internationally, pro indoor and pro outdoor for their dad. The Huntleys will have a great story for a long time to come and we wish them only the best.”

The Bayhawks open their season on May 15th at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium when they take on the Long Island Lizards at 7 PM. Ticket information is available at www.thebayhawks.com

Bayhawks Acquire Three Players In Trade with Boston

ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 28th, 2010) –  The Bayhawks made their first major move of 2010 on Thursday by acquiring attackman John Christmas, defenseman Ray Megill and goalkeeper Mike Levin from the Boston Cannons in exchange for midfielder Kevin Buchanan and three draft picks, according to Bayhawks General Manager Spencer Ford.

“We have been looking for a right handed attackman who can do it all – feed, dodge, score,” said General Manager Spencer Ford.  “John Christmas is one of those players who is extremely complete and experienced, and will be a leader for this team. After losing Shawn Nadelen to what is believed to be a season ending injury, the addition of Ray Megill will add a defensive minded player who can contribute in all aspects of defense – a player who can play with a short stick, long stick, and control the entire defensive end of the field.  Mike Levin is a proven leader who has won a championship as a starting goalie and his team-first attitude will pay dividends on the back end of the field.”

Christmas was the Cannons 1st round pick (5th overall) in the 2005 Collegiate Draft.  He scored 68 goals and recorded 55 assists for the Cannons over 5 seasons, including career high 24 goals and 19 assists in 2007.  Megill was the Cannons 1st round pick (9th overall) in the 2007 Collegiate Draft.  The defensemen appeared in 28 games over 3 seasons with the Cannons.  Levin spent one year with the Cannons and played 9 games in net in 2009 and recorded a 5-2 record.

The Bayhawks sent Kevin Buchanan and three draft picks to Boston. Buchanan, 23, played in 6 games last season for the Bayhawks, recording at least 1 point in each game.  He finished the 2009 Season with 7 goals and 6 assists.  Buchanan was the 5th overall pick in the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft by Los Angeles.  He scored 8 goals and recorded 5 assists in the 2008 season.  Buchanan graduated from Ohio State University in 2008 and that season was named Great Western Lacrosse League Player of the Year.  He recorded 175 points for the Buckeyes over 4 seasons.

“I want to thank Kevin for his contributions to this team,” said Ford. “His personality alone will make him a great asset to any team he plays for.”

The Bayhawks open their season on May 15th at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium when they take on the Long Island Lizards at 7 PM. Ticket information is available at www.washingtonbayhawks.com.

Seibald Coming to Wings
By Bryan Bartram

Boston Blazers 2009 1st round draft pick is heading to the city of brotherly love to play for the wings. Max Seibald, the first American taken in the ‘09 entry draft was selected 8th overall by the Boston Blazers.

Seibald the former standout from Cornell was the recipient of the 2009 Tewaaraton award for the most outstanding college player in Division I.  During the off season the Blazers knew that Seibald would be a hold out and made him inactive for the 2010 NLL season. The Wings receive Max Seibald while sending the Boston Blazers a 2010 1st round draft pick and future consideration. For a team that seems to be very inconsistent on offense, Seibald will bring them that spark that they are looking for.

We’re excited to have that opportunity. And although I’ve been playing lacrosse a long time, I remember being a kid and what it means to look up to a role model and that’s what we try to be. We feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to do that and we’re excited to get going. Take it easy I want to feel young too.” (said with a laugh) Its great to be captain of the team and these young guys look up to me as a player, and on and off the field. And the younger players, I  have the opportunity to help these guys, nurture them along a little bit and hopefully show them it is good to give back and they’ll kind of follow in our footsteps.
